Alex Garfin Joins Billy Zane Creature Feature ‘Wekiwa’

Alex Garfin has joined Billy Zane in Wekiwa, an upcoming creature feature currently in production in Orange County, Florida, according to Dread Central, which cites Variety’s reporting. Garfin is taking over the role of Patrick, a part previously set for Ty Neckar. The cast also includes Kevin Chapman, C.S. Lee, Alex Trumble, Oliver Wyman, Tyler Steelman, Xhaania Wright and Caroline Jane West. Set in the summer of 1983, Wekiwa follows a showman who has invested all his money in a resort on a Florida island. The Seminole have reportedly warned people about the island for three centuries. When a British documentary director arrives with four young performers to film a commercial intended to rescue the resort, a county marine biologist also comes to investigate a problem affecting the lagoon. The film’s synopsis keeps the nature of the threat concealed, noting that no one on the island will explain what is in the water. The story then centers on the consequences of that silence as the group’s stay progresses. Richard L. Anderson wrote and directed Wekiwa. Anderson has primarily worked in sound, with credits in the sound department on Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist, according to the report. Salomé Breziner and Scott Rosenfelt are producing. Breziner and Rosenfelt said the filmmakers wanted to make a movie that would leave audiences both amused and wary of the water. They also pointed to Anderson’s decades of sound work as an influence on the film’s approach to creating unease through what audiences hear before they see the source.
