APPOFENIACS, a horror film written and directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, is set to arrive in theaters on October 2, according to Horror Society. The film centers on deepfake technology and the consequences that can follow when fabricated videos are treated as truth.
Aaron Holliday stars as Duke, who uses deepfakes as a kind of party trick. The character is amused by how easily people trust what they see and hear, but his pastime takes a darker turn when violence enters the picture. The resulting fallout unfolds through several intersecting storylines.
Among those affected is Poppy, played by Simran Jehani, who is traveling to the desert for a weekend involving cosplay and foreplay. Sean Gunn plays Clinto Binto, described as a notable figure in the scene whose reputation is considered too costly to fake. Paige Searcy portrays Lazzy, a stranger whose bad timing leads her to the wrong line, coffee shop, and day for an argument.
The cast also includes Michael Abbott Jr., Jermaine Fowler, Will Brandt, and Harley Bronwyn. Piliero serves as both writer and director.
The film’s title refers to the habit of seeing patterns and connections where none exist. Its themes include consent, deception, confirmation bias, and the erosion of trust surrounding manufactured media. APPOFENIACS frames deepfakes not only as falsehoods, but as tools that can produce deadly consequences when people accept them as genuine.
Horror Society’s synopsis describes the central danger as extending beyond the lie itself: once anyone’s version of reality can be created with a tap of a finger, the reactions to that fabricated truth can become the real source of horror. APPOFENIACS will be released theatrically on October 2.
