Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Will Make Audiences Track Every Bullet

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil will bring one of the video game series’ defining anxieties to the big screen by making audiences aware of how much ammunition its protagonist has left. During a live Reddit Q&A following screenings of the movie’s opening 30 minutes, Cregger said viewers will know the number of bullets in Bryan’s gun and will feel the consequences when he misses a shot. Cregger also said he wants audiences to remain closely aware of Bryan’s physical condition as the story progresses. He hinted at another game-inspired method for communicating the character’s health but did not explain how that element will work. The comments came after Sony Pictures presented the first half-hour of Resident Evil to fans and members of the press in Los Angeles, New York and Dallas on September 1. The full film was not screened, meaning the early responses do not represent reviews of the finished movie. Attendees and outlets cited by iHorror praised the footage for its tension, scares, humor and connection to the experience of playing the games. According to the reports, Cregger’s approach extends beyond familiar creatures or franchise references. The director has described using the games as an influence on the film’s camera work, movement and visual language. The camera reportedly often stays behind Bryan as he enters and examines spaces, while portions of the movie will use a first-person perspective. The film is also said to incorporate elements such as entering new environments, encountering obstacles, searching for items and acquiring improved weapons. Resident Evil is an original story rather than a direct adaptation of one specific game. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier whose journey toward Raccoon City turns into a fight for survival as a T-virus disaster unfolds. The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directed the film from a screenplay written with Shay Hatten. It is produced by TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film and Davis Films, with Robert Kulzer, Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Victor Hadida, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan listed as producers. The movie is rated R for strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout. Resident Evil is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters, including IMAX according to Dread Central, on September 18, 2026.
