Buddy Sequel Has Not Been Announced Despite Strong Opening

Buddy has delivered a stronger theatrical opening than expected, but a sequel remains only a possibility for now. According to Dread Central, Casper Kelly’s independent horror film earned $5.3 million during its opening weekend, exceeding the approximately $2.5 million projection reported ahead of release. The film debuted on 1,277 screens and is expanding into additional theaters for its second weekend. Dread Central reports that, if its performance continues, Buddy could potentially pass $10 million domestically. The outlet notes that such a result would be a significant theatrical outcome for a modestly budgeted independent horror production. There has been no announcement of a follow-up movie. Kelly, however, has repeatedly indicated that he would like to continue exploring the world established in Buddy. In an interview with The Direct, the filmmaker said he would be interested in continuing the story and explained that he developed rules and lore that did not all appear in the first film because he wanted to preserve some mystery. Kelly also told Nerdtropolis that a potential sequel would not simply explain every unanswered question. Instead, he said it could resolve some mysteries while introducing additional ones. He identified Teletubbies and the unusual children’s television work of Sid and Marty Krofft as influences he wanted to incorporate but could not fit into the first film, suggesting those ideas might be considered for a sequel. In comments to The Black List, Kelly was also asked whether unseen episodes of the fictional Buddy television show could eventually be released. His response tied that possibility to making another movie, while indicating that questions about a sequel have become common. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported, before Buddy opened, that Kelly had ideas for both a prequel and a sequel if the film found an audience. Its opening performance has now provided evidence of that audience, but the theatrical results alone do not confirm that another installment will move forward. For now, Kelly’s interest is established while the project’s financing and official approval remain unconfirmed.
