Rob Savage says Other Mommy contains approximately 50 jump scares, offering a glimpse into the approach behind his adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. The comments arrived alongside several new images from the film, premiered by Entertainment Weekly and reported by Dread Central.
Savage qualified the number by noting that the definition of a jump scare can vary. He also defended the device, explaining that an effective scare does not necessarily need to follow the familiar pattern of silence followed by a loud sting.
According to the report, Other Mommy combines dread, larger set pieces and paranoia as Bela and the audience question whether the figure before them is her mother, Ursula, or the sinister entity known as Other Mommy. The story follows 8-year-old Bela as a strained family is terrorized by an entity emerging from her closet that wants to take up residence inside her.
Savage also revealed that the film’s opening scene is taken directly from the first page of Malerman’s novel. After Bela’s parents put her to bed and leave the room, she remains alone in the darkness and whispers, “Goodnight, Other Mommy.”
Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark and Dichen Lachman star in the film. James Wan is producing alongside Blumhouse and Atomic Monster.
Other Mommy has received an R rating for “some bloody violence and language,” as reported by Dread Central. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 9, placing its release ahead of Halloween.
